Objective

 

The proposed system is nutrition information system collaborating by PDA and server. It can help the users monitor their healthy conditions conveniently. It is a portable, internet-enabled nutrition advisor, which can be used to keep track of user’s diet and workout history, generate warnings of harmful food based on users’ body information, and create periodic health reports. Also, this system will benefit restaurant and food suppliers, who are also our users, that they could retrieve customer order data for commercial usage.

 

There are many nutrition information systems existing in the market. After studying, we found that those systems have problems more or less, they are not good enough. Some of them provide too professional function, some of them do not have user friendly interface, and some of them do not have reasonable healthy control methods. These problems will be described in the Problem part in details.

 

Hence, there is much room to improve such nutrition systems. Besides the basic functions, more new features will be added into the system. The most significant improvement in our proposed system is introducing PDA device into the system architecture. Users take along with PDA to record necessary data. The PDA connects to server, which stores nutrition database, to update data periodically. These proposed new features and functions will be described in Function part in detail.

 

Moreover, the proposed system enlarges the scope. Not only users, but also restaurants will be involved in its scope. The details will be described in Scope part.

Problems of current system:

 

After reviewing several nutrition systems, we summarized four main deficiencies among these systems. The following is the detail description of each deficiency.    

 

Without server support

     

         Nearly all the processes of systems that we studied are operated on client side, which required device with vital computing power and storage space. Unfortunately most PDA’ CPU is around 200Hz to 300Hz throughout the market. Therefore reserving large calculation and database on the PDA may slow down the operation. That is why our proposed system is designed as server-client architecture. We only keep some general database and simple calculation on client side. The server side will execute most tasks like large graph presentation, calculation, or query. From another point of view, our system can be considered as just an input device.

Without motivation for data entering  

 

         One common problem of there systems is that there is no back up method when users don’t enter the diet information sometimes. If this situation happens all the time, the figure would not be consisted with user’s real condition. In order to encourage people to enter data frequently and regularly, we offer some promotion plan after their registration. If user really can’t enter, we will estimate the users’ situation according to their diet style and health information they provided.  

 

     

Without notification support

 

         The third problem is that most nutrition softwares can not provide notification for user under some situations. Take a person with heart disease as example. When he wants to order a dish that is not good for his health at a restaurant, at this moment the system will warn him to choose another one or give him some suggestion. Or when he is confusing which dish is better, system will compare the nutrition fact of those dishes so as to make a recommendation for user. As we know that people with heart disease have to take pill regularly, therefore our proposed system have the function that alert user to take pill after he set up the schedule on the system.

 

Inefficient database update

 

           The last problem of these systems is inefficient database update, especially on food selection. For most current systems, the database of food only consists of general food. If the user eats some   diet that is not on the list, users can enter the food by themselves. Although most system support this function, it would be not so efficient when number of the data to be entered is large. Our proposed system provides the function that users can update their database from server whenever the users is online.

When people become hurt or ill, our first thought is immediately turn to medication, hoping for relief of our symptoms, who would seldom consider that the actual serious culprits are their poor lifestyle habits. As Dr. Mark Nelson reported in the American Journal of Hypertension, saying that “42% of patients with hypertension could get off their medication if they would follow simple lifestyle changes.”

 

So, what can we do in order to achieve healthy lifestyle?

1. A healthy diet

2. A modest exercise program

The most important one is to have a healthy diet. What we eat has a substantial effect on our overall health, and diet is closely related with the risk of having many diseases, such as diabetes, blood pressure, fatty, and other chronic degenerative diseases.

 

Recently, more and more people begin to pay more attention to their health based on diet and nutrition. However, as the knowledge of nutrition is complex, some people come to dietitian for advices, and some choose to purchase nutrition supplements existing in the market. But, both of them are expensive and incontinent. As long as the changes of people’s attitudes toward food, restaurants and food supplier should also make corresponding changes.

 

This PDA system will give nutrition advices from a balancing healthy diet perspective, which is observing comprehensive useful nutrition facts from various kinds of foods, and disputing all the harmful effects by calculating users’ personal health information.

Those calculating regulations comes from our analysis of standard academic nutrition formulas, they are:

1.        BMI (body mass index)

2.        Human Daily Calories Needs

3.        Suggested Nutrition Facts Daily Needs

And the healthy diet habit advices are based on standard academic nutrition rules, they are:

1.        Food Pyramid

2.        RDA (recommended dietary allowances)

3.        Diseases and medication food constraints

 

Our database comes from USDA (US government), FEHD (HK government), Supermarkets, Restaurants and Major Food Suppliers, who have high reliabilities, that user can use our system contentedly.

Scope

The proposed system designs for the users who need an electronic-based tool to help monitor their own healthy condition. Especially, this system is suitable to the patients, such as diabetic and cardiac. These users use PDA device.

 

PDA side users are required to enter personal information as initialization. In the using period, users should enter their dish information. Functions of the system, such as calories calculation and pills remainder, are based on the information provided by users. But this system can only help the user to monitor their health. It is only a tool which just provides some recommendations to the user. So it means that if the user wants to make him healthier, he should follow the recommendation consciously. It does not mean the user who uses this system can keep him health automatically. In addition, these users must pay service fee of the system periodically. Service fee is described in the following paragraph.

 

The database of system is stored in a computer server. Server side users are responsible to maintain and update the database. Thus, system does not only provide accounts to the PDA side users, but also to the server-side users, including restaurants joined in the system and system maintainers.

 

The restaurants are responsible to update their own dish menu information in the database by using their accounts. Then the PDA side users can update their data when connect to the server, and the system runs efficiently. But PDA user cannot order a dish from a restaurant through PDA directly. To achieve this function requires the restaurants in our system can order dish online. Hence this function is unreasonable in a short period.

 

System maintainers are charge of system maintenance, including technology support and service fee management. The proposed system will cooperate with bank to manage the service fee. The fee will be paid by the user’s credit card, cash or check.

 

Moreover, all the nutrition information are collected and organized by system designers. If the nutrition laboratories have new result, system maintainers are responsible to update the system database.

Compared with other existing nutrition softwares on the market, our proposed system has more novel and creative functions, that satisfy different users’ various requirements, besides the basic functions.

l         Reminder service:

This function uses alter, notice, and warning messages to help users eat nutritious food, and take care of their diseases.

n         The proposed system can remind its users of taking pills or food on time. Reminding message will automatically pop up when it is the time.

n         For some users with certain diseases, such as diabetes, or high blood pressure, the proposed system would remind them of what kind of food they can eat, and what cannot.

n         The proposed system can do food comparison. It would compare the elements of different food that users want to choose from, and then tell users which one is the most nutrient.

n         It would show nutrition tips frequently to endorse users.

l         Online service:

Besides the software installed on the PDA, a server would be set up to provide various services for the PDA software.

n         Food recommendation: The server can analyze users’ inputs from the PDA system, and then tell the most popular food of each restaurant.

n         Eating pattern recommendation: the server can analyze users’ eating patterns, and then recommend the healthier one to other users or the more successful weight loss menus to different users.

n         Health report: the proposed system would have monthly or weekly health reports for the users. Users can also check their health status in the past, by sending request. These reports would be in graphics patterns.

 

Besides those new features, the proposed system also provides basic health care services as common nutrition softwares do:

n         Learns users’ calorie needs and adjusts the calorie budget for weight loss, fitness, and other health care purpose.

n         Counts calories in different kinds of exercises.

n         Set up your own dietary plan

n         Presents both easy-to-read percentage summaries and in-depth nutrient analysis of foods.

n         Guesses recipes of gackaged foods.

Problems of current system:

 

After reviewing several nutrition systems, we summarized three main deficiencies among these systems.

 

Inefficient food entry

 

       One common problem of there system is inefficient food entry. Usually it should take three to five clicks to finish a food entry, sometime even more. Some interface is not user friendly, which make user more confuse when enter the food. So it’s really time-consuming to enter all the data after a meal. It will somehow discourage the positivity of user to make data entry, which will affect the output of the system in the long run.    

 

Limited database

 

       An another problem of these systems is limited database, especially on food selection. For most current systems, the database of food only consist general food. If the user eats some special diet that is not on the list, then it would be different to track the nutrition intake sometimes. Besides that, they don’t provide the menu of popular restaurants. For most business man, they are likely having meal outside, which leading to be not so efficient to record the dishes.

This system provides several services for users, as well as for restaurants.

For users, it provides health care services, including weight loss function, and reminder function.

1.        weight loss function:

This function can help users to set their weight loss goal, and supervise them to reach the goal effectively.

l         The PDA application records all the data of daily diet and exercise entered by users, and then does some judgments.

l         It shows whether the calorie is over the daily amount set by the user. If it is, alert message will pop up to warn the user.

l         The application also can show the weight trend. That means the users would be fatter or slimmer if he/she keeps eat similar food.

2.        reminder function:

This function uses alter, notice, and warning message to help users eat nutritious food, and take care of their diseases.

l         For some users with certain disease, such as diabetes, the PDA application would remind them of what they can eat, and what cannot.

l         The application can also remind patients to eat pills on time. Reminding message will automatically pop up if it is time for them to take pills.

l         The application can also tell the user which food is more suitable. When the user enters several kinds of food that he/she wants to choose from, the application would calculate the calorie contained in each food, and then tell the user which one is more nutrient.

l         As the application can collect many data from different user input, it can show the most popular food of each restaurant to its users. So that the user can make a quite decision of what to eat if they are not familiar with food in that restaurant.

For restaurants, the application can help them to service their customers better.

l         Restaurants can update their menus anytime, and also broadcast any promotion to application users.

l         As all the order of food is recorded by the application, restaurants can be informed of the most popular food ordered by the application users. So that they can know the popular taste of their customers.
