To get an idea of the differences between IUPAC and CAS nomenclature you can compare the names for the following structures. Note that for many compounds you cannot simply invert the name to get the CAS Index name.

For each compound you can see the inverted (Index type) IUPAC name (black) and CAS Index name (red).

1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid, 5-carboxymethyl-

1H-pyrrole-2-acetic acid, 5-carboxy-

phosphinin-2-ol

2-phosphorinol

naphthalene, 6-bromo-7-methyl-1,2-dihydro-

naphthalene, 6-bromo-1,2-dihydro-7-methyl-

2H-thiochromene

2H-1-benzothiopyran

benzo[lmn]phenanthridine

thebenidine

1,3,5,2λ5,4λ5,6λ5-triazatriphosphorine

1,3,5,2,4,6-triazatriphosphorine, 2,2,4,4,6,6-hexahydro-

Advantage of Index Names

The advantage of naming structures according to the CAS Index is that in a list of names the basic parts can easily be grouped together. For alphabetized Index names, most structures with equal parent compounds are gathered together. In the case of IUPAC names, related compounds are scattered.

Storage and work with a particular class of compounds is simplified using Index names, due to the tendency for parent compounds to be grouped during alphabetization.
